Political scientist Prof. Samuel Adu Gyamfi has warned electoral consequences against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) if internal divisions in the Ashanti Region are not resolved ahead of the 2028 general elections.
His comments were made in relation to a petition by some party executives to the National Steering Committee seeking the cancellation of appointments made by the recently elected Ashanti Regional Chairman, Odeneho Kweku Appiah popularly known as COKA.
Speaking on Oyerepa Radio, he argued that Ghanaians should give the party only 23 per cent of the votes in 2028 to send a strong message to its leadership and members over their conduct.
“If the infighting in the Ashanti Region does not stop, Ghanaians should give the party only 23 per cent of the votes in the 2028 elections. Anything more may make its leaders think their conduct is acceptable and continue to misbehave,” he said.
Prof. Adu Gyamfi stressed that the NPP belongs to its members and supporters, not exclusively to its executives, insisting that party leaders must prioritise the collective interest over personal ambitions.
He criticised what he described as a tendency among some party officials to treat the NPP as their personal property, imposing decisions they consider appropriate without consulting or listening to other stakeholders.
“The NPP party is not for the executives but for the people,” he emphasised.
He maintained that party members whose actions undermine the collective interest must be corrected, warning that unresolved internal disagreements could attract electoral punishment.
