Nigeria's northwest has lost five more police officers on a road that has long been a death trap for travellers and the men sent to protect them.
Five officers attached to the Zone 10 Command were killed after suspected terrorists ambushed a commercial bus carrying them to Zamfara State on special assignment along the Sokoto-Gusau Road.
They were reportedly deployed to provide security for the All Progressives Congress primaries in the Zamfara North senatorial district, in Kaura Namoda.
How it happened
The officers came under heavy gunfire along the border corridor between the two states, and the attackers reportedly fired on the Zamfara State mass transit bus at close range.
A survivor told Chronicle NG that the team was travelling in three vehicles when gunmen opened fire on the third one, killing five of his colleagues. The officers were travelling on a public transit bus, not in an armoured, escorted convoy, which raises hard questions about how the movement was planned.
What police have confirmed
The spokesperson for the AIG's office, Zone 10, DSP Abdullahi Faruk, confirmed the incident, and the bodies were deposited at the morgue of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto.
He said investigations had begun and promised more details as the probe progresses. Early reports said some officers may also have been abducted, but this is unconfirmed. Reports differ on whether the attack happened on Sunday or Monday evening.
A pattern, not an accident
This is not the first such attack. In September 2024, suspected terrorists killed eight security personnel in an ambush on the Gusau-Funtua road.
In June 2026, three police officers were killed by an IED planted on the Anka-Bagega road. Armed groups across Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Kaduna and Kebbi have repeatedly attacked travellers and rural communities and abducted people for ransom.
Questions for the authorities
Why were officers moved on a public bus along a known high-risk corridor?
Was there route intelligence or escort cover for election-duty deployments?
What support and compensation will the families receive?
How will election-period deployments be made safer across the northwest?
The bottom line
When the officers meant to secure a political process cannot secure their own journey, ordinary travellers are even more exposed. Condolences are not enough. The families deserve answers, and the road needs a serious security plan.
