The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has called for the death penalty for the 72-year-old man arrested over the killing of two people at Sakumono in Accra.

His comments follow the arrest of Samuel Christopher Osei Anto in connection with the murder of Irene Atuguba, 47, and George Atuguba, 57, at NTHC Estate, Sakumono, on Friday, October 30.

The two victims were reportedly shot at their residence following a confrontation involving the suspect over an alleged GH¢500,000 debt.

An earlier police account indicated that Osei Anto had visited the residence with a 47-year-old woman, Beatrice Mumuni, to demand repayment of money allegedly owed him by George Atuguba.

Reacting to the incident in a social media post on Monday, November 2, A Plus expressed concern about the trauma the killings could cause the victims’ families, particularly the children who were reportedly at home.

He said if he were the President, he would ensure the suspect received the death penalty and his execution broadcast live.

“If I were President of Ghana, I would ensure that he receives the death penalty and his execution is broadcast live as a deterrent to others. Some crimes must have consequences severe enough to make people think twice before committing them,” he stated.

The lawmaker further stressed the need for severe consequences for acts of violence, arguing that human life must be respected.

“People must understand that human life is sacred and that there must be consequences for taking it. People must learn sense!” he stated.

In a statement, the police said the suspect was arrested on Sunday, November 1, at a hideout in Tikrom, near Ejisu in the Ashanti Region and is currently in police custody assisting investigations.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s Criminal Offences (Amendment) Act, 2023 (Act 1101), replaced the death penalty for murder with life imprisonment.
