Two Ghanaian twins and an American woman have pleaded guilty in the United States to conspiracy to commit wire fraud over a US$9 million romance scam that allegedly targeted mainly elderly victims.
Court records show that twin brothers Jamal Abubakari and Kamal Abubakari, both 22, together with Amanda Joy Opoku-Boachie, 53, admitted their roles in the scheme. The brothers entered guilty pleas on October 13, 2026, while Opoku-Boachie pleaded guilty a week later.
Prosecutors said the conspiracy operated between July 2024 and April 2026, using fake identities on dating sites and social media to build online relationships with victims and persuade them to send money under false pretences.
Authorities said losses exceeded US$9 million, with victims located across 25 US states as well as Germany and Austria. Investigators alleged that some of the proceeds were transferred to co-conspirators in Ghana and other countries.
As part of their plea agreements, the defendants agreed to forfeit luxury jewellery seized during their arrests, including watches, rings, chains, medallions and earrings.
