Trump Welcomes Freed American Stephen Hubbard to the White House

President Trump met Stephen Hubbard, the American recently released from a Russian prison, at the White House on Friday, October 30, 2026. The 74-year-old retired teacher from Michigan arrived roughly a week after his release, accompanied by his son, Greek Orthodox priest Father Joseph Coleman, and other family members. It was Hubbard's first public appearance since he regained his freedom.

Who Is Hubbard?

Hubbard was arrested by Russian forces in Ukraine in April 2022. He was later convicted of mercenary activity in a closed-door trial and sentenced to six years and ten months. His family disputed the allegations, and the State Department considered him wrongfully detained.

The Release

Putin announced the release on October 21 at a meeting in St Petersburg with US envoy Steve Witkoff. Putin's spokesperson said it was done at Trump's request and also took the American's poor health into account. Trump said he had asked Putin during a recent call, and that, unlike earlier releases, the US did not have to give up anyone in return. Hubbard was the second American freed by Russia in about two months, after Marine veteran Robert Gilman in August.

In the Oval Office

Trump asked whether Hubbard had been treated reasonably well. Hubbard said yes, adding that some guards treated him sympathetically. He said he had heard promises of release before and only believed it when he was led out of the prison and saw the car waiting. He told Trump he would not have lasted another year.

The Politics

The "no swap" claim has not ended the debate. Trump appeared to link Hubbard's release to his decision to exempt Russia from sanctions passed by Congress, and he has not reimposed them since. The release also came as Trump took a series of steps seen as benefiting Russia, including that sanctions waiver and a deal to import Russian diesel, while Washington's alliance with Ukraine shows signs of fraying.

Supporters will see a humanitarian success for a frail, elderly man. Critics will ask what Moscow gained in return.

Hubbard's family welcomed his return but noted that five other families of Americans held in Russia would struggle to understand why their loved ones remained detained.

For Africa and the Sahel, where Russia is an expanding security and influence partner, the episode shows how Moscow can use prisoner releases as diplomatic currency while peace talks over Ukraine continue.
