The father of 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager Javits Frimpong, who was shot dead in the Bronx, New York, has appealed to the suspects believed to be behind the killing to surrender to the police.
Thomas Frimpong revealed that his son had complained about being bullied by two schoolmates just days before the fatal shooting, which occurred while he was on his way to school.
Recounting the events leading up to the incident, Mr Frimpong said the school principal contacted him about three days before the shooting to report that two students had been harassing Javits and had subsequently been suspended.
He said he reached out to his son to find out whether he was safe, and the teenager assured him that everything was fine.
However, after returning home, Javits disclosed that one of the boys frequently bullied him, particularly when he went to the school cafeteria for lunch.
“He said, any time I’m going to lunch, especially one of them, always bullies me. I said, why? Why don’t you hear that? He said, he always reports them,” Thomas recounted.
According to the father, the principal later clarified that Javits was not responsible for the earlier confrontation and had only acted in self-defence. The two students involved were subsequently suspended.
Mr Frimpong described his son as a reserved teenager who had relocated from Africa to join him in the United States barely a year before his death.
He said Javits preferred spending time on his phone and often stayed in his bedroom rather than socialising with others.
The grieving father has urged those suspected of killing his son to turn themselves in, expressing confidence that they would not escape justice.
“I would tell them to give themselves to the police. I don’t think they are going to go free,” he said.
