The Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, has observed that climate change poses a national security threat to Ghana, calling for climate action to be integrated into the country's peace and security agenda.
She said the effects of climate change, including flooding and growing pressure on land and water resources, were threatening livelihoods and could undermine national development.
Dr Agyemang-Rawlings made the remarks at the closing ceremony of Climate Talks 2026, an initiative organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Ghana in collaboration with TV3.
In a social media post on Friday, October 30, she stressed the need for a broader approach to addressing climate change, beyond treating it solely as an environmental concern.
"Climate change is not just an environmental issue, it is also a matter of national security," she stated.
She cited flooding in Greater Accra and increasing pressure on land and water resources in northern Ghana as examples of the growing impact of climate change on communities.
The minister also pointed to Ghana's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0 as an opportunity to strengthen climate resilience, create green jobs and protect vulnerable communities.
She called for concrete measures to address the effects of climate change, stressing that discussions must translate into practical interventions.
"We must move beyond dialogue to practical action. Protecting our environment is ultimately about protecting our people and securing our future," she added.
