The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that prospective parliamentary candidates, including sitting Members of Parliament, will have from November 1 to 10, 2026, to formally declare their intention to contest the party's parliamentary primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, October 29, General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong said the declaration-of-intent exercise marks the first stage in the party's candidate selection process.
According to him, all prospective aspirants will undergo eligibility checks to ensure they meet both the party's constitutional requirements and Ghana's legal criteria for parliamentary candidates.
“Our prospective parliamentary candidates will be checked on whether or not, per our constitution, they indeed qualify to stand as or to be nominated as a parliamentary candidate for our party,” he said.
Mr Kodua Frimpong clarified that declaring an intention to contest does not amount to the opening of nominations and does not permit aspirants to begin campaigning.
“The party wants to reiterate that declaration of intent does not mean that a person has the right to go around and campaign in various constituencies. We have still not opened nominations,” he stated.
As part of the exercise, interested aspirants are required to register through the party's online portal, PPC.nppghana.org, and pay a declaration fee of GH¢2,000.
The NPP says the declaration process is intended to streamline its internal electoral preparations and gather information on prospective candidates before the formal nomination stage.
The party will also undertake a zoning exercise from November 1 to December 4, 2026, beginning with the Northern Zone, as part of preparations for subsequent phases of the primaries.
In addition, training and capacity-building workshops have been scheduled for the party's various zones:
- Northern Zone: December 1-4, 2026
- Middle Zone: December 8-11, 2026
- Southern Zone: December 15-18, 2026
The declaration-of-intent exercise will be followed by the formal nomination, vetting and primary election stages that will ultimately determine the NPP's parliamentary candidates for the 2028 general elections. Both incumbent MPs and prospective challengers are expected to undergo the party's eligibility assessment before advancing to the next phase of the process.
