Residents of some communities in Kumasi will experience planned power outages from Friday, October 30, to Sunday, November 29, as the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) undertake works to upgrade a major transmission line.
The outages will occur between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on scheduled working days, excluding weekends, as engineers string transmission conductors on the Anwomaso-Ahodwo 161kV transmission line.
The project, which is currently 70 per cent complete, is expected to be completed by the end of November 2026.
In a joint statement issued on Thursday, October 29, GRIDCo and ECG said the planned interruptions were necessary to protect engineers, other personnel and members of the public during the works.
The statement said the outages would affect communities along the transmission line route as the stringing activities progressed through their respective sections.
“The project has reached a critical stage involving the stringing of transmission conductors on the towers. This activity requires planned interruptions in electricity supply to some communities along the line route to protect the lives of engineers, other personnel working on the project and members of the public,” the statement read in part.
ECG is expected to publish a detailed schedule indicating the affected communities and the corresponding dates for the outages to help consumers plan ahead.
GRIDCo and ECG acknowledged that the interruptions could disrupt household activities, businesses and other electricity-dependent operations.
They appealed to affected residents and businesses to exercise patience and cooperate with the project teams.
The two companies said the upgrade is intended to strengthen the transmission network and improve the reliability of electricity supply in Kumasi and other parts of the Ashanti Region.
The project is being undertaken under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.
