Jason Arday: When an Allegation Outlives the Evidence

Jason Arday: When an Allegation Outlives the Evidence

The late Cambridge sociologist Jason Arday is again at the centre of a dispute about evidence, the press and what is owed to a man who can no longer reply.

Byline Times reports that a fresh Taylor & Francis investigation concluded without substantiating the plagiarism allegations against Arday, the former Professor of Sociology of Education at Cambridge.

The publisher is reported to have examined four of his papers without finding evidence of wrongdoing. The details of the finding come from Byline Times and its readers, so they should be checked against the publisher's own statement.

The background is grim. Nathan Cofnas accused Arday in July of significant plagiarism in his PhD thesis and published papers. The story spread quickly, Arday resigned on 5 August and was found dead at home on 14 August.

Earlier reviews had already gone in his favour. Liverpool John Moores University, where he did his doctorate, investigated his thesis and did not uphold plagiarism, citing "honest and reasonable error" compounded by inadequate supervision.

Byline Times says a separate MDPI review of a 2018 paper found correctable errors but no plagiarism or fabrication, and that Taylor & Francis had earlier cleared a 2020 paper. It argues that The Times did not report these earlier findings. The Times has not been quoted in the sources I found, so its response is missing here.

The picture is not one-sided, even on the sources that defend Arday. He was not found guilty of plagiarism by any academic institution, but some academics have called for further investigation into his work. Cambridge said on 7 August it was opening an investigation after new information about his academic qualifications and honorary appointments.

Even Byline Times says it cannot and does not rule out the possibility of plagiarism in his work, and suggests honest error as another explanation. "No evidence to substantiate" is a narrower finding than "proof of innocence".

The fight has also turned political. Byline Times says the "independent inquiry" into his Cambridge appointment comes from a group backed by Reform UK donor Ben Delo. The outlet is an interested party here, and the group has not been quoted, so readers should weigh that claim accordingly.

The wider point stands. Universities and publishers use slow, rule-bound processes. Headlines move faster. When allegations spread quickly and corrections lag, the damage often outlasts the findings.

A responsible press would report the later investigations as prominently as the first accusations, and say clearly what each one did and did not find.

For a man who can no longer answer, accuracy is the minimum owed. Whatever the remaining inquiries conclude, they should rest on evidence, not on the noise around the case.
