GCU collaborates with Prempeh College to tackle business student transition crisis

In a major move to protect the pipeline of corporate talent in Ghana, Garden City University College (GCUC) has established a strategic alliance with Prempeh College to launch an educational intervention tackling the transition crisis among Senior High School (SHS) business students.

The landmark collaboration seeks to arrest a worrying systemic drain where thousands of brilliant secondary commerce graduates abruptly abandon the discipline when transitioning to higher learning institutions. By targeting these students well before university applications commence, the partnership introduces early academic clinics and tech-driven career modeling to bridge foundational gaps.

Speaking to a section of the business students at Prempeh College regarding the root causes of this transitional crisis, many lamented the heavy toll of negative peer influence alongside several other compounding socio-academic factors.

In an exclusive interview with Joy Learning TV, the Head of the Business Department at Prempeh College, Ms. Helena Akowuah, outlined the profound importance of this institutional alignment. She highlighted the critical factors driving the sudden shift away from commerce and detailed the collaborative framework required to secure the academic pipeline.

Adding a higher education perspective, the Director of Admissions at Garden City University College, Shannan Akosua Magee, emphasized the need for a balanced academic focus.

"We have done well by pushing our science students to another level, but it must be noted that business and economics form the backbone of our country," Ms. Magee stated. "Many universities in Ghana are still experiencing a decline in business student intake. Through this partnership, GCUC is actively working to demystify rigid business modules and prove to secondary students that accounting and management are exciting, high-tech, and globally viable paths."

She added that the Vice-Chancellor of GCUC, Professor Eric Kwasi Ofori, is highly enthusiastic about the initiative's focus on entrepreneurship and its potential global impact.

With these robust academic measures officially in motion, stakeholders remain optimistic that this blueprint will keep Ghana's premier young business talents on the right professional track.
