The Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) of Regentropfen University College has screened more than 50 people during a breast cancer awareness and screening exercise in Namoo in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region, with 18 women found to have breast abnormalities.
The exercise, held on Thursday, October 22, 2026, formed part of efforts by the student political organisation to promote breast cancer awareness, encourage early detection and improve access to preventive healthcare in the community.
The screening provided participants with an opportunity to assess their breast health and receive information on the importance of regular examinations and seeking medical attention when unusual changes are noticed.
According to the organisers, 18 women were identified with abnormalities during the exercise. However, the findings do not necessarily mean the affected women have breast cancer, as further medical evaluation is required to establish the nature of the abnormalities.
The discovery has underscored the importance of community-based screening initiatives, particularly in areas where access to regular preventive healthcare services may be limited.
The initiative also sought to encourage women to overcome fear, stigma and misconceptions surrounding breast cancer, which can sometimes prevent people from seeking timely medical attention.
Breast cancer awareness campaigns continue to emphasise that early detection and prompt medical assessment can improve treatment outcomes. Women are encouraged to seek professional advice whenever they notice unusual lumps, changes in breast shape or size, nipple discharge or other concerning symptoms.
The TEINs initiative reflects the role student organisations can play in supporting community development and health education beyond the university environment.
