CEWEFIA condemns alleged abuse of female students in SHSs
The Central and Western Fishmongers Improvement Association (CEWEFIA) has condemned the alleged abuse, harassment and other forms of gender-based violence against female students in Senior High Schools (SHSs).
The women-focused non-governmental organisation said the allegations contained in an investigative documentary by JoyNews and journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni highlighted the urgent need to strengthen measures to protect girls and ensure that schools remain safe environments for learning and development.
The documentary, titled Inside the Dreaded Headmaster’s Bungalow, examines allegations of sexual abuse involving female students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
In a statement, CEWEFIA said the revelations raised serious concerns about the safety of students and the responsibility of school authorities and relevant institutions to protect young people entrusted to their care.
The organisation stressed that no girl should experience abuse, intimidation, exploitation or violence while pursuing her education.
It said every girl deserved to feel safe, respected and protected, regardless of her background or circumstances.
CEWEFIA also expressed solidarity with victims and survivors of abuse, encouraging them to speak out, seek appropriate support and assert their rights without fear or shame.
It called on parents, school authorities, law enforcement agencies and other relevant institutions to treat allegations of abuse with the seriousness they deserve and ensure that appropriate action is taken.
The organisation also urged stakeholders to provide protection and support for survivors while pursuing accountability for alleged perpetrators.
“Silence must never protect perpetrators, and no victim should be left to suffer alone,” the organisation stated.
CEWEFIA said addressing gender-based violence in educational institutions required collective action and sustained commitment from all stakeholders.
It reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the rights, dignity, safety and empowerment of girls and called for concerted efforts to create school environments where female students could learn, grow and thrive without fear of abuse.
