Akuapem North Member of Parliament Sammi Awuku has warned that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) could suffer electoral consequences over allegations of sexual abuse involving students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).

He accused the party of shielding the school’s suspended headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, whose alleged conduct has sparked concerns about the safety and welfare of students.

Speaking on UTV, Mr. Awuku questioned how students could be expected to trust teachers if a school leader entrusted with their protection was accused of abusing that responsibility.

“If a headmaster who has been entrusted with the duty of care compromises that responsibility and betrays the parents, then it becomes difficult to punish teachers if they do the same thing,” he said.

Although acknowledging that the allegations had not been established in court, the MP said reports that 19 girls had come forward to corroborate the claims made the matter particularly serious.

He also raised concerns about the headmaster’s alleged political affiliations, including his reported position as NDC Juaben Constituency Secretary and membership of the National Film Authority board, suggesting that the connections had fuelled suspicions of possible political protection.

“The NDC will pay for this,” Mr. Awuku warned, predicting that the controversy could affect the party’s electoral fortunes.

The MP commended the Ghana Education Service (GES) for directing officials to step aside while investigations into the allegations continue.

He further maintained that if the allegations against the suspended headmaster were proven, he should be dismissed and barred from teaching.

Mr. Awuku also called for sustained attention to the case, insisting that those responsible must be held accountable regardless of their political affiliations or positions.

“This crime has no expiry date,” he declared, stressing that the matter should not be allowed to fade from public attention with time.

I did not see the reason why the NDC is going to pay for the deeds of a member in the publication? Is there any point where the party conived or shielded the teacher? Lets do reasonable and decent politics.
