The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) Ladies Association, in collaboration with the Archbishop Porter Girls’ Past Students Association (APPSA), has held the 2026 Breast Cancer Awareness and Health Walk to promote early detection, regular screening and healthy living.
Held under the theme “Wings of Strength: Walk Together, Stand Strong,” the event took place on Saturday, October 17, 2026, with participants assembling at 6:00 a.m. at the Ayi Mensah Police Tollbooth along the Ayi Mensah–Aburi Hiking Trail.
The walk ended at the Ayi Mensah Park near Indigo Homes, where participants also had access to free breast care and screening services.
The initiative was organised as part of efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer and encourage women and the general public to prioritise regular health checks and seek medical attention promptly when they notice unusual changes.
The theme, “Wings of Strength,” highlighted the importance of unity, resilience and collective action in promoting women's health and supporting efforts to prevent and detect breast cancer at an early stage.
Speaking to the press during the event, the organiser, Mrs Patience Erskine Arthur, President of the GCAA Ladies Association and President of APPSA, said the programme was organised to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month and encourage women to take their health seriously.
“Today, we are here to undertake Breast Cancer Awareness Day. As you know, October is recognised worldwide as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
"As an association, and because we are ladies, we decided to organise this programme to raise awareness about breast cancer and as you can see, we have a free breast screening at the event grounds offering free breast care and screening exercise. We hope that, in the near future, anyone who experiences a breast-related problem will be encouraged to visit a health facility for screening.
"Through this breast cancer awareness programme, if someone discovers a lump or notices any unusual changes in their breast, they can seek medical attention early so that appropriate treatment can begin immediately.
"We are here today in the spirit of women coming together. As Women of Wings, Women of Strength, we have united as one body to make this programme a success.”
Mrs Arthur said the free screening was intended to make breast health information and preventive services more accessible to participants while encouraging people to seek professional care whenever they identify possible warning signs.
The health walk also provided participants with an opportunity to combine physical activity with health education, reinforcing the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle alongside regular medical examinations.
Breast cancer remains an important health concern, and awareness initiatives such as the programme are aimed at encouraging individuals to recognise possible warning signs and seek professional medical advice.
The organisers said early detection and prompt medical evaluation of unusual breast changes could help improve treatment outcomes.
The walk also brought together women and members of the wider community around a common health message, demonstrating the role that community-based initiatives can play in promoting healthier lifestyles and greater awareness of breast cancer.
The organisers said the “Wings of Strength” campaign would serve as a reminder that breast cancer awareness should extend beyond October and become part of everyday health practices, including regular screening, health education and timely medical attention.
