The Managing Editor of the Newscenta newspaper, Elvis Darko, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of hypocrisy over President John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of Emelia Affi Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).
His comments follow the swearing-in of Mrs Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah on Monday, October 12, to fill vacancies created by the resignation of Dr Bossman Eric Asare and the retirement of Samuel Tettey.
The appointment of Ms. Agbenyo has sparked controversy, with the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) questioning her neutrality because of her alleged involvement in the NDC’s 2024 election campaign and her role as a governance sector spokesperson during the preparation of the party’s manifesto.
Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily programme on Monday, October 19, Darko said the NDC had adopted a different position on politically affiliated EC appointees after assuming power.
“I have always said that hypocrisy is the problem of this NDC government," the journalist stated.
He argued that the NDC had previously criticised the appointment of individuals it considered affiliated with the NPP to the Electoral Commission but was now facing similar allegations over Ms. Agbenyo’s appointment.
The journalist also questioned the consistency of President John Mahama’s position on the issue, recalling his criticism of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s appointments to the Commission while in opposition.
Meanwhile, the Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has stated that the appointments were strategic to neutralise the political imbalance at the commission.

Yes, it is true that NDC are hypocrites. So are you Elvis and the NPP. You are all also irritating hypocrites. Yesterday, you didn't see anything wrong, but today you suddenly see everything wrong with the practice.
