Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, a journalist, writer and son of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has died in Egypt, the Nkrumah family has announced.
Gamal died peacefully in Cairo following a prolonged illness, according to a family statement issued by his sister, Samia Nkrumah.
The statement said he had been receiving care at a rehabilitation centre after suffering a stroke.
Throughout his life, Gamal remained committed to issues including justice, human dignity, African unity and international solidarity.
As a journalist and commentator, he used his work to examine political, social and cultural developments in Africa and around the world.
The family described him as a man of intellectual curiosity, independent thought and quiet conviction who carried forward the legacy of his father while establishing his own identity and reputation through his work and principles.
It said his death was a major loss to the family, as well as to his friends, colleagues and readers who valued his insight, humanity and engagement with contemporary issues.
"The Nkrumah family remembers Gamal with immense love, gratitude and pride. His wisdom, kindness and devotion to the values he held dear will remain an enduring source of inspiration."
The family expressed appreciation to those who supported Gamal during his illness, particularly the medical professionals and caregivers in Cairo who attended to him.
It also thanked the governments and people of Egypt and Ghana for their support during the period.
The family has appealed for privacy as it mourns the loss.
Details of memorial arrangements and opportunities to pay tribute to Gamal’s life and legacy will be announced in due course.
May he rest in eternal peace.
