Passengers travelling through the Accra International Airport will be required to undergo luggage screening at the entrance of departures before entering the departure hall, the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has said.
A notice by the company said the pre-screening checks would be conducted by the Narcotics Control Commission at the entrance to the Departure Hall, before passengers proceed to check-in.
The screening will be conducted using scanning machines and sniffer dogs as part of enhanced security measures.
It, therefore, advised travellers to arrive at the airport at least three hours before their scheduled departure time to allow adequate time for security screening, check-in, and other boarding formalities.
“Please note that access to the Departure Hall is restricted to travelling passengers only,” it reminded the public.
“Non-travelling persons will not be permitted entry.”
“GACL appreciates the cooperation and the understanding of all passengers and airport users as we continue to cooperate with the security agencies to strengthen security and ensure safe, secure, and efficient airport operations for all,” the Company said.
In July this year, GACL deployed new security screening equipment at passenger checkpoints in Terminals 2 and 3 of the Accra International Airport (AIA) to strengthen security and enhance passenger convenience.
The upgraded technology is to make security checks more efficient, while maintaining high aviation security standards.
The new system, does not require passengers to remove laptops and other large electronic devices from cabin baggage during screening.
Passengers can also keep their shoes and belts on unless additional checks are required based on security profiling.
The new system features an Automatic Tray Return System designed to speed up the return of trays to passengers for repacking screened items, thereby reducing waiting times.
