Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has urged delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to elect national executives capable of providing effective leadership and restoring public confidence in the party.
Addressing party faithful through a video message during the NPP’s National Delegates Congress and National Officers’ Elections at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, the former President called on members to prioritise unity and uphold democratic principles as they choose the party’s next crop of leaders.
He encouraged delegates to view the election as an opportunity to strengthen the party’s internal structures and select leaders capable of offering what he described as functional leadership.
“I am happy to have this chance to welcome all of us to this all‑important conference to select a new crop of the national executive committee that would give functional leadership to the party. Let us operate democratically, the way our tradition demands of us. We need all the unity we can get and mastery within the party.
“Ghana needs our party to lead it into prosperity and transformation, and that must be the aspiration of all of us. So even as we meet to pick our new crop of leaders — chairman, general secretary and other officeholders — to lead us forward, I want to appeal to all of you: let us from now on select the National Executive Committee of the party on a basis not on talk but on careful examination to find out the sort of leadership that will enable us to regain the confidence of the people of Ghana.”
