The Ghana Education Service (GES) is expected to place 4,405 teachers on the Director II rank this year, representing a significant increase from the current 272 staff on the rank.

Head of Public Relations at the GES, Daniel Fenyi, disclosed the figures in a social media post on Thursday, October 1, while providing an update on the processing of teacher promotions.

He said the number of teachers expected to be placed on the Director II rank represents a 1,500% increase over the existing figure.

“This year, we expect 4,405 teachers to be put on the Director II rank, a 1500% increase from the existing number of 272,” Mr Fenyi wrote.

He also disclosed that 88 staff are expected to be placed on the Director I rank, compared with the existing 20, representing a 340% increase.

According to him, teachers who applied for the Director I and Director II ranks have already received text messages directing them to select venues for their aptitude tests.

However, about 800 applicants reportedly provided wrong or unreachable contact details and may therefore not have received the messages.

Mr Fenyi advised affected applicants to contact the Human Resources Division at the GES headquarters through their district or regional human resources offices.

He said the GES has also processed more than 35,000 teacher promotion documents ahead of the October 5 deadline and expects to complete the process by then.

“Promotion for staff on the lower ranks is already big on the table and is also in the process,” he said.

The update comes as the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) continue their nationwide strike, which began on September 25.

The unions have cited delays in placing promoted teachers on their appropriate salary scales and paying accumulated arrears among their key grievances.

They are also demanding progress on negotiations for a new collective agreement and implementation of the 20% deprived-area allowance.
