The Drug Free Unit of the Eastern Regional Command (ERC) of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has engaged about 450 first-year students of Ghana Senior High School (SHS), Koforidua, on substance abuse and its implications for their health, social development and academic performance.
The engagement, held on September 28, 2026, formed part of a week-long orientation programme organised by the school for newly admitted students.
The initiative was aimed at equipping the students with knowledge about the consequences of substance abuse and related challenges, while encouraging them to make informed choices and adopt drug-free lifestyles.
Leading the presentation, ANCO Deborah Ankrah explained the health risks associated with the repeated use of substances such as cannabis, cocaine and opiates.
She warned that prolonged substance abuse could cause serious damage to vital organs, including the kidneys, liver, heart and lungs, and could eventually result in death.
ANCO Ankrah also urged the students to take their education seriously and resist negative peer influence that could expose them to substance abuse and undermine their academic performance and social development.
She encouraged the students to become advocates for a drug-free society while remaining focused on their academic and personal development goals.
Teachers who participated in the session were also encouraged to play an active role in identifying early signs of drug-related behaviour among students and provide or facilitate the necessary support.
The engagement was highly interactive and informative, with both students and teachers actively participating in the session.
