The Ghana Army has launched Exercise Thunder Bolt 2026 in Sunyani Bono Regional at Yawhima shooting range, a major military marksmanship competition aimed at sharpening combat skills, enhancing operational readiness, and strengthening the overall combat effectiveness of officers and soldiers across the service.
The exercise brought together personnel from various commands and formations to test their marksmanship proficiency, foster healthy competition, and promote the professional development of soldiers in line with the vision of building a motivated, value-driven, technologically enabled, and operationally decisive Ghana Army.
Launching the exercise, General Officer Commanding, Central Command, Brigadier General Joshua Amanor noted that Exercise Thunder Bolt 2026 is more than just a shooting competition. He described it as a critical military training activity designed to assess marksmanship, strengthen soldiers’ professional competence, and enhance combat effectiveness and operational readiness.
According to him, marksmanship remains one of the most important aspects of military training, equipping soldiers with the ability to handle weapons safely, employ them confidently, and fire them accurately and consistently under varying operational conditions.
He emphasized that the exercise would foster healthy competition among participating personnel while strengthening cohesion, camaraderie, and esprit de corps. He added that the competition would encourage soldiers, particularly younger personnel, to develop and maintain high standards of marksmanship and professionalism.
Brigadier General Joshua Amanor further noted that the exercise would provide military leadership with an opportunity to identify and develop skilled marksmen capable of forming a formidable Ghana Army shooting team to represent the Service at the forthcoming Ghana Armed Forces shooting competition, Exercise Fire Blast 2026.
He stated that the Chief of the Army Staff’s vision of a motivated, value-driven, technologically enabled, and operationally decisive Ghana Army provides a clear direction for the continuous growth and transformation of the Service. Central to the realization of this vision, he said, is the deliberate investment in human capital development.
“No matter how sophisticated equipment and technology may be, the effectiveness of an army ultimately depends on the competence, discipline, professionalism, and commitment of its officers and soldiers,” he stressed.
The Commanding Officer observed that Ghana has enjoyed relative peace and stability over the years, providing a conducive environment for economic growth and national development. However, he cautioned that the security environment within Ghana and the wider West African sub-region continues to evolve.

He pointed to the growing threats of violent extremism, terrorism, organized crime, armed robbery, and other forms of insecurity, noting that such challenges require the Ghana Armed Forces to remain vigilant, prepared, and capable of responding effectively at all times.
“Recent developments across the sub-region have demonstrated that security threats can emerge rapidly and without warning. We cannot afford complacency. We must maintain a high state of readiness and be prepared to respond decisively whenever such threats arise,” he said.
The officer stressed that readiness cannot be achieved during a crisis but must be built in advance through realistic, deliberate, and continuous training. It is against this backdrop, he explained, that Exercise Thunder Bolt 2026 assumes particular importance within the Ghana Army’s training calendar.
Addressing the competitors, he reminded them that a soldier’s ability to handle a weapon safely, employ it confidently, and fire it accurately remains fundamental to combat effectiveness. Every improvement achieved on the firing range, he said, contributes directly to the operational capability and mission readiness of the Army.
He congratulated the participating firers on their selection to represent their respective commands and formations, describing their inclusion as evidence of the confidence placed in them by their commanders.
General Officer Commanding, Central Command challenged the competitors to approach the exercise with discipline, determination, concentration, and professionalism.
“Compete hard, but compete fairly. Seek not only to win, but also to learn. Use this opportunity to observe, exchange ideas, and build professional relationships that will strengthen the Ghana Army as a whole,” he stated.
He further reminded participants that they were soldiers first and competitors second, emphasizing that safety, discipline, and strict adherence to training procedures must remain paramount throughout the competition.
The Officer urged all participants to uphold the highest standards and finest traditions of the Ghana Army and to give their best in making Exercise Thunder Bolt 2026 a successful and worthwhile training event.
Joseph Addae Akwaboa Esq, Bono Regional Minister who was the special guest of honour in his remarks, commended the Ghana Army for organizing such important exercise to maintain operational readiness, enhance professionalism, and strengthen public confidence in our security institutions.
The Minister noted that the Reset Agenda of His Excellency the President seeks to create the conditions necessary for sustainable economic growth, social progress, and national transformation and therefore depends largely on the existence of a peaceful, secure, and stable environment. “In this regard, the Ghana Armed Forces, and particularly the Ghana Army, have a critical responsibility to remain vigilant, capable, and prepared to respond effectively to current and emerging security threats. Exercises such as Thunder Bolt play an essential role in ensuring that our military personnel possess the skills, discipline, and operational competence required to protect the peace and stability that we all cherish," he stressed.
He pleased that Exercise Thunder Bolt 2026 was being conducted in the Bono Region and called on the people in the Region to continue supporting the Ghana Armed Forces and other security agencies in their efforts to maintain peace and security.
The nine (9) commands and formations competing among the service include Central Command, Support Services Command, Northern Command, Southern Command, Command 15 Armored Brigade, Command 14 Engineer Brigade, Command Army Special Operations Brigade, Command 17 Signal Brigade and Command 16 Army Brigade.
