Akyem Hemang residents demand justice for alleged military shooting of 29-year-old miner

Residents of Akyem Hemang and surrounding communities near Osino in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region have staged a protest demanding justice over the death of a 29-year-old resident, Douglas Acheampong.

Acheampong reportedly died on August 26, 2026, after he was allegedly shot at an illegal mining site in the area.

Residents who organised the protest on Tuesday, September 29, alleged that military personnel involved in an operation at the mining site shot Acheampong at close range while he was fleeing the area.

They called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death and demanded the arrest and prosecution of anyone found responsible.

The protesters, wearing red armbands and carrying placards, marched through the streets before presenting a petition to the Fanteakwa South District Chief Executive, Mercy Korang.

The placards carried messages including "Douglas deserves justice", "Douglas blood cries for justice", "Stop the brutality", "Uphold human dignity", "Military must serve not kill" and "Justice for Douglas".

Assembly Member for the area, Richmond Darko, alleged that Acheampong was shot from behind while attempting to flee after security personnel reportedly fired warning shots into a crowd at the mining site.

He called for a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances that led to Acheampong’s death and urged that anyone found culpable be dealt with according to law.

Receiving the petition on behalf of the authorities, DCE Mercy Korang assured the protesters that their concerns would be forwarded to President John Dramani Mahama and the relevant institutions for the necessary action.

She appealed to the protesters and residents to remain calm and patient while the matter was pursued through the appropriate channels.

The residents, however, maintained their call for justice and accountability over the death of Acheampong.
