Founder’s Day: NAPO urges Ghanaians to uphold Kwame Nkrumah’s legacy

2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) vice-presidential candidate Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has joined Ghanaians in commemorating the legacy of the country's first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Dr Opoku Prempeh said the occasion should be used to reflect on the contributions of Nkrumah and other forebears who helped shape Ghana’s independence, development and democracy.

He also highlighted his participation in this year’s NkrumahFest at Nkroful, Nkrumah’s birthplace in the Western Region, as part of activities to commemorate the former President’s legacy.

The 2026 NkrumahFest marked Nkrumah’s 117th birthday and was held under the theme “Nkrumah @117: Celebrating His Enduring Legacy – Africa Must Unite or Perish.”

“On Founders’ Day, we celebrate the monumental footprints of Ghana’s first President and all those whose contributions shaped Ghana’s independence, development and democracy,” Dr Opoku Prempeh wrote in a social media post on Monday, September 21.

He said the sacrifices and patriotism of Ghana’s forebears should continue to inspire citizens to work towards building a stronger country for future generations.

Dr Opoku Prempeh, who previously served as the MP for Manhyia South, said his presence at NkrumahFest offered him an opportunity to reflect on the former President’s contribution to Ghana and Africa.

“It is for this reason that I was glad to be in Nkroful for NkrumahFest this year, to celebrate and reflect on the enduring legacy of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah,” he said.

His comments come as Ghanaians mark Founder’s Day on September 21, which coincides with the birth anniversary of Dr Nkrumah.

The day has been restored as a statutory public holiday and is being observed in 2026 as part of national commemorations of Nkrumah’s contribution to Ghana’s independence and nation-building.
