Zimbabwe Suspends Journalist for One Year Over ‘Unethical’ Reporting on Chinese Investments

A Zimbabwean journalist has been suspended for one year after authorities concluded that his reporting on Chinese companies and investments repeatedly breached professional and ethical journalism standards.

Sources familiar with the development said five other journalists have also been formally warned over coverage that allegedly portrayed Chinese investments in Zimbabwe in an unduly negative manner.

In a separate development, a letter of complaint has reportedly been sent to the United States Embassy in Harare, raising concern over allegations that an embassy official has been engaging, facilitating, sponsoring or supporting selected Zimbabwean journalists in producing reports critical of Chinese companies operating in the country. The source said such conduct, if confirmed, would raise serious questions about media independence and potential external interference.

Regarding the suspended journalist, the source said a review of multiple articles published under his byline revealed repeated failures to uphold core principles of accuracy, fairness, balance, verification and responsible journalism, despite earlier warnings.

“Where allegations are made against companies, investors or public institutions, you are expected to make reasonable efforts to obtain their responses and reflect those responses fairly in published reports,” the source noted.

The suspension took effect on September 7, 2026, and will run until September 7, 2027, subject to applicable legal and administrative procedures. During this period, the journalist will not be entitled to exercise the privileges associated with his accreditation.

However, the source stressed that the suspension was not intended to prevent him from engaging in lawful journalism or expressing legitimate views.

“The purpose of the suspension is not to prevent the journalist from engaging in lawful journalism or expressing legitimate views, but to provide an opportunity for him to reflect on professional standards and ethical reporting practices,” the source said.

Concerns raised included reports that placed heavy emphasis on allegations and negative claims about Chinese companies without providing sufficient opportunity for the affected parties to respond. There were also instances where information presented as fact appeared to require further verification or corroboration.

The source said journalists have a professional responsibility to distinguish clearly between verified facts, allegations, claims and opinions.

Meanwhile, the US official at the centre of the complaint was allegedly involved in actively engaging, facilitating or supporting selected journalists in producing reports that consistently portrayed Chinese investments in Zimbabwe negatively. The source said the allegations were serious enough to warrant the Embassy’s attention and investigation.

It added that diplomatic missions have a legitimate interest in engaging the media and promoting international exchange, but independent journalism requires that journalists remain free to determine what they investigate, whom they interview, what evidence they publish and what conclusions they reach.

On the warnings issued to the other five journalists, the source said a pattern of reporting on Chinese companies and investments had been observed. They were reminded that professional journalism demands accuracy, fairness, balance, verification and a clear distinction between fact, allegation, analysis and opinion.

The developments come as Zimbabwe continues to deepen economic ties with China, with Chinese companies active in mining, infrastructure, energy, manufacturing and agriculture.
