Cape Coast South MP commissions ultra-modern children's library at Ekon to boost learning, digital access

The Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South, Hon. George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan Yeboah, has commissioned an ultra-modern community library at Ekon to provide schoolchildren and residents with a conducive environment for reading, learning and digital education.

The facility, which is open to pupils and students from Ekon and neighbouring communities, is equipped with a dedicated learning and reading area, a computer room, a washroom and an office for the librarian. The project is expected to provide young people in the community with improved access to educational resources and technology.

The commissioning comes at a time when access to libraries and digital learning facilities continues to be highlighted as an important part of improving educational opportunities in Ghana. The Ghana Library Authority says its mandate includes establishing, equipping, maintaining and managing public libraries across the country, with libraries increasingly serving as hubs for literacy, technology and lifelong learning.

At Ekon, the Cape Coast Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon. George Justice Arthur, urged residents to take ownership of the newly commissioned facility and ensure that it is properly maintained.

According to the MCE, the library belongs not only to the people of Ekon but to the wider Cape Coast community, and its sustainability would depend largely on how responsibly residents use and maintain it. He encouraged parents, students and community members to protect the facility so that the MP would be encouraged to bring more development projects to the area.

The call for maintenance echoes concerns frequently raised at the commissioning of educational facilities across Ghana, where stakeholders have urged communities to protect public infrastructure and ensure that such investments continue to benefit future generations. At the commissioning of an ultra-modern library at Akropong-Akuapem, for instance, stakeholders called for regular maintenance of the building and computers as well as continued restocking of books.
