Bawumia will use digitalisation to create opportunities for youth – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader Alexander in Parliament Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin has touted the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2028 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s vision of using digitalisation to create opportunities for Ghana’s youth.

He said Dr Bawumia’s understanding of the digital economy positions him to better manage Ghana’s economy and create sustainable jobs for young people.

Osahen Afenyo-Markin was speaking at the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) chapter of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) Freshers’ Orientation and Welcome Programme held over the weekend.

“We are in an era of digital economy. So, if somebody tells you Dr Bawumia doesn't talk about the economy, he's an economist, and he's talking about digitalisation. Let the person know the trend in economic management today is anchored in digitalisation,” he said.

The Minority Leader said a key part of Dr Bawumia’s vision is to create an inclusive society that would harness the talents and resources of Ghanaians regardless of their ethnic, political or religious backgrounds.

He argued that young people would be central to the development of a digital economy because they would be the main beneficiaries of the opportunities created through digitalisation.

The Effutu MP also criticised the NDC government over some of its campaign promises, including the 24-hour economy, the “one job, three shifts” policy, women’s banking and its pledge to end illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

According to him, the government has failed to deliver on those promises and has instead established the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), which he accused of promoting activities associated with illegal mining.

He urged the youth to consider Dr Bawumia’s digitalisation agenda as an alternative approach to creating employment and expanding economic opportunities.

“A leader who understands the digital economy can better manage an economy, and to better manage a digital economy, you must rely on the youth because it's the youth that you create opportunity for,” Osahen Afenyo-Markin said.
