Police arrest two over 692 parcels of suspected indian hemp at Dawhenya

Police in the Prampram Division of the Tema Region have arrested two persons after 692 parcels of substance suspected to be Indian hemp were intercepted at a snap checkpoint at Dawhenya.

The suspects, identified as Freeman Amedoku and Godwin Asigeh, were arrested in the early hours of Tuesday, September 8, 2026, while travelling in an Accra-bound Ford Transit vehicle with registration number GT 6140-22.

According to a police situation report, the vehicle was intercepted at about 12:45 am by a team led by Inspector Jerry Anani, with Inspector Frederick Dzemeki and General Sergeant Benjamin Padi.

The vehicle was being driven by Asigeh Godwin, assisted by Amedoku Freeman.

A search of the vehicle reportedly led to the discovery of an unspecified number of parcels suspected to contain Indian hemp, wrapped in rubber.

The suspects, together with the vehicle and the suspected narcotic substance, were subsequently conveyed to the Devtraco Police Station for further investigation.

Police later counted the parcels in the presence of the suspects and established the total number at 692 pieces, all wrapped in yellow polybags.

Statements were taken from the arresting officers, while the 2 suspects also provided cautioned statements to assist with investigations.

The suspected narcotic substances have been retained as exhibits, while the Ford Transit vehicle has been impounded.

The two suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue into the case, which concerns alleged possession of narcotic substances contrary to Section 37 of the Narcotic Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019).

Police said further developments would be communicated.
