ICT accounts for 41.5% of Ghana’s 6% Q2 2026 economic growth – GSS

Ghana’s economy grew by 6.0% in the second quarter of 2026, with the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector accounting for 41.5% of the total economic growth.

The latest figure, however, represents a slowdown from the 6.6% growth recorded in the second quarter of 2025, according to the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

The Government Statistician, Dr Alhassan Iddrisu, said the strong performance of ICT highlights the changing structure of Ghana’s economy, with digital services becoming an increasingly important driver of growth.

“More than four Ghana cedis out of every 10 Ghana cedis of new growth in Ghana’s economy came from one sector: information and communication technology. Your phone, your mobile money, your data bundle. That is the story of our economy right now,” he said.

Dr Iddrisu disclosed this at a press conference to release the 2026 second-quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP) estimates and the June 2026 Monthly Indicator of Economic Growth (MIEG).

He said nominal GDP reached GH¢372.1 billion during the quarter, representing an 11.4% increase.

The services sector remained the largest contributor to economic activity, accounting for 57.6% of total GDP growth and 45.9% of the economy.

Services grew by 8.0%, although this was lower than the 9.0% recorded during the same period in 2025.

Industry growth, meanwhile, increased to 4.3%, up from 2.4% a year earlier, driven largely by a strong rebound in oil and gas.

The oil and gas sector moved from a 29% contraction in the second quarter of 2025 to 22.4% growth in the latest quarter.

Agriculture grew by 3.9%, down from 7.1% recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.

Apart from ICT, other strong-performing subsectors included transport, which grew by 14.9%, forestry by 10.7%, manufacturing by 6.6% and livestock by 5.9%.
