Nyarkotey Obu Honoured for Pioneering African Naturopathy in India

Kalaburagi, India — Prof. Raphael Nyarkotey Obu, who is now a visiting Naturopathic Professor and Director of African Programs in Traditional , Complementary and Alternative Medicine at Lincoln University College, Malaysia, has been honoured in India for his pioneering role and exceptional contributions to the development and promotion of African Naturopathy.

The recognition was presented by Arujiva Ayurveda and Naturopathy Hospital during activities marking the completion of a semester clinical training programme for Ghanaian naturopathic practitioners in India.

The honour acknowledged Prof. Nyarkotey Obu’s sustained efforts to build professional education, clinical training, research, institutional partnerships and continental advocacy for Naturopathy in Africa.

Recognition of a Continental Vision

The award celebrates Prof. Nyarkotey Obu’s work in promoting African Naturopathy as an emerging movement rooted in Africa’s healthcare realities, cultural experience and professional development needs.

His advocacy has focused on developing a credible, evidence-informed and culturally relevant naturopathic system for Africa, while creating opportunities for knowledge exchange with established international systems of traditional, complementary and integrative medicine.

Prof. Nyarkotey Obu is the Founding President of the African Naturopathic Federation, a continental body created to promote cooperation, educational standards, professional development, research and policy advocacy for Naturopathy in Africa.

The Federation brings together practitioners and stakeholders from different African countries around the goal of strengthening Naturopathy through shared standards, ethical practice, competency development and appropriate regulatory frameworks.

As Founding President, Prof. Nyarkotey Obu has championed a vision in which African practitioners are not merely consumers of foreign healthcare models but active contributors to the development of knowledge, policy and clinical practice in traditional and complementary healthcare.

His leadership has also encouraged African practitioners to build strong institutions, participate in research and engage constructively with governments, regulators and international partners.

Building Naturopathic Education in Ghana

Prof. Nyarkotey Obu is also the President of Nyarkotey College of Holistic Medicine in Ghana. Through the College, he has worked to expand professional education and clinical training in Naturopathy, holistic medicine and related complementary healthcare disciplines.

The College has pursued local and international partnerships to strengthen the competencies of African practitioners and bridge the gap between classroom education and practical clinical experience.

Its partnership with Arujiva resulted in a pioneering semester clinical immersion programme in Naturopathy, Ayurveda and Yoga for 16 Ghanaian practitioners in India.

The successful implementation of the programme demonstrated the practical value of Ghana–India cooperation and created a new pathway for African practitioners to receive international clinical exposure.

Promoting the African Naturopathy Movement

The emerging African Naturopathy movement seeks to develop an approach that responds to the continent’s cultural, educational, legal and healthcare realities while remaining open to global scientific knowledge and responsible international collaboration.

Prof. Nyarkotey Obu has promoted the view that Africa must define its own standards, strengthen practitioner education, encourage research and create suitable institutional and regulatory structures for Naturopathy.

His work has also highlighted the importance of South–South cooperation, particularly collaboration between Africa and India in Naturopathy, Ayurveda, Yoga and other AYUSH-related fields.

The recognition in India reinforces the growing international interest in the development of African Naturopathy and the potential for deeper cooperation between African institutions and established traditional healthcare systems.

Arujiva Partnership Becomes a Model for Action

The honour was presented within the context of the partnership between Arujiva Ayurveda and Naturopathy Hospital and Nyarkotey College of Holistic Medicine.

Their collaboration moved beyond the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to the implementation of a structured clinical programme with practical outcomes for African practitioners.

The partnership has demonstrated how international agreements can support professional education, faculty interaction, clinical exposure, research and institutional development when they are backed by clear commitment and action.

For Prof. Nyarkotey Obu, the Arujiva experience has also provided encouragement that building recognition for an emerging healthcare movement requires patience, persistence, quality improvement and sustained engagement.
