Proposed Damongo University to focus on science, technology, AI and robotics — Education Minister 

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the proposed University of Science and Technology in Damongo will focus on emerging fields including artificial intelligence, robotics and digital sciences.

He said the project forms part of the government’s broader plan to expand access to quality tertiary education and develop the human capital needed to drive Ghana’s economic transformation.

Haruna Iddrisu disclosed this after engaging the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Cong Song, on the proposed university on Wednesday, September 2.

“The Damongo University is envisaged as a centre of excellence in Science and Technology, Robotics, Digital Sciences, Artificial Intelligence, and other emerging disciplines," he wrote in a social media post.

According to the Education Minister, the government secured a US$30 million grant from the Chinese government last year to commence the project.

He said the university would not be limited to the construction of physical infrastructure but would be developed as a centre for advanced scientific and technological education.

The institution is expected to train young people in disciplines that can support Ghana’s technological advancement and contribute to the transformation of the economy.

Haruna Iddrisu said the project is also linked to President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of establishing universities in regions that currently do not have one.

“The Damongo University project forms part of a broader vision of His Excellency President Mahama to establish universities in regions that currently do not have one," said the Minister.

He said the initiative is intended to expand educational opportunities for young people, develop critical human capital and promote balanced national development.
