Interior Minister announces revival of security services sports games

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has announced plans to revive the Security Services Sports Games (SESSA Games) as part of efforts to promote unity, teamwork and talent development among Ghana’s security services.

He said the Ministry had already established a committee to develop modalities for the revival of the games, with this year’s edition scheduled to take place in November.

The Minister disclosed this when the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Mr Kurt Okraku, called on him to discuss the revival of the inter-security services sporting competition.

Mr Muntaka said sports played an important role beyond the core security responsibilities of personnel, noting that bringing members of the various security services together through competition would strengthen camaraderie, discipline and teamwork.

He said the games would also provide an avenue for identifying football talents within the security services who could potentially progress to represent the country at the national level.

The Minister explained that although the 2026 edition would be organised at the national level, plans were underway to introduce a broader structure in subsequent editions, beginning with competitions at the district and regional levels before culminating in the national games.

He said the approach would ensure wider participation while creating opportunities to identify and develop sporting talents from all parts of the country.

Mr Muntaka reiterated the Government’s commitment to supporting the initiative and ensuring that the SESSA Games returned to their former glory.

Mr Okraku said the GFA was interested in supporting efforts to revive the games because the security services had considerable sporting talent, particularly in football.

He said the revival of the inter-security games would promote unity and cohesion among the security services while creating a significant talent pool for Ghana football.
