The Odumase-Krobo Circuit Court has sentenced a 35-year-old unemployed man, Anani Bakar, to four weeks' imprisonment for stealing a bundle of plantain at Nuaso Newtown in the Eastern Region.
Bakar, a resident of Kpong Zongo, pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
The court, presided over by Mr Kwasi Appiatse Abaidoo, sentenced him to serve four weeks in prison as a deterrent to others who engaged in similar offences.
According to the prosecution, led by ASP Kwabena Bright Asare who is also the District Commander for the Odumase-Krobo Police Command, the complainant, Mr. Moses Narh Ogyam, 45, a driver and farmer, owned a plantain plantation at Nuaso Newtown.
He said the complainant had, for some time, suffered a series of thefts from his plantation farm
He consequently informed residents in the area to keep watch over the farm.
The prosecutor noted that, on August 16, 2026, at about 0740 hours, a 71-year-old woman spotted Bakar in the complainant's plantation allegedly stealing plantains.
The prosecution said the woman, who was afraid to approach Bakar, raised an alarm by shouting, “Thief! Thief!” which attracted the attention of some residents.
“The residents rushed to the scene, arrested Bakar and found him with a sack containing the stolen plantains,” he said.
They subsequently took him to the Nuaso Police Station, where he was re-arrested and detained, while the stolen plantains were kept as exhibits.
The commander explained that during police interrogation, Bakar, in his caution statement, admitted stealing the plantains.
After investigations, he was charged with the offence and brought before the court, where he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four weeks' imprisonment.
