EPCG elects Prof. Frederick Mawusi Yao Amevenku as fourth moderator

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG) has elected Rev. Prof. Frederick Mawusi Yao Amevenku as the fourth Moderator of the General Assembly, ushering in a new chapter in the leadership and mission of the historic church.

Prof. Amevenku was elected during the 12th General Assembly of the EPCG. The meeting brought together representatives, ministers, elders and other delegates of the Church to deliberate on matters concerning its spiritual, administrative and developmental direction.

His election comes at a significant moment in the life of EPCG, following the tenure of Rt. Rev. Dr. Lt. Col. (Rtd.) Bliss Divine Kofi Agbeko, who has served as Moderator of the General Assembly.

Prof. Amevenku brings to the office extensive experience in pastoral ministry, theological education, biblical scholarship and institutional leadership. He is an ordained minister of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana.

He is a distinguished scholar in New Testament Studies and African Biblical Hermeneutics. Since 2024, he has served as President of Trinity Theological Seminary, Legon. The Seminary identifies him as an Associate Professor of New Testament and African Biblical Hermeneutics.

He is also a Research Fellow at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, where he obtained his doctoral degree. His academic interests include New Testament Studies, African biblical interpretation, mother-tongue theologising, disability hermeneutics, poverty, migration and environmental concerns.

Prof. Amevenku’s relationship with EPCG extends beyond academic scholarship. He has served the Church in pastoral and ministerial capacities and has participated actively in the formation and preparation of ministers.

His commitment to ministerial formation was evident in June 2026 when, as President of Trinity Theological Seminary, he charged newly commissioned EPCG pastors to remain committed to the Great Commission and to serve with dedication and faithfulness.

His ministry therefore brings together the three important dimensions of the pulpit, the classroom and church administration.

One of the distinctive features of Prof. Amevenku's scholarship is his interest in interpreting the Bible from an African and mother-tongue perspective. His academic work has explored how African languages, cultures and experiences can contribute meaningfully to biblical interpretation and Christian theologising.

This emphasis resonates strongly with the historical identity of EPCG, whose ministry has deep roots in the Ewe-speaking communities of Ghana. The Church has placed considerable importance on Scripture, education and the use of indigenous language in Christian mission.

The election of Prof. Amevenku comes at a time when EPCG, like many historic churches in Ghana, faces the challenge of balancing its rich heritage with the changing spiritual, social, economic and technological realities of contemporary society.

His background in theological education and institutional leadership is expected to provide valuable experience as the Church addresses issues including spiritual and numerical growth, effective evangelism, leadership and ministerial formation, youth ministry, education, financial sustainability, church property development, social responsibility, environmental stewardship, and stronger engagement with Ghanaian society.

Prof. Amevenku's transition from the presidency of Trinity Theological Seminary to the highest leadership of EPCG represents an important link between theological education and denominational leadership. At Trinity, he has held several academic and administrative responsibilities, including Director of Graduate Studies, before becoming President. His multidisciplinary education — including theology, African studies, education and law — has given him a broad intellectual foundation for leadership.

The election of Prof. Frederick Mawusi Yao Amevenku is therefore more than a change of leadership. It marks the beginning of a new chapter in the continuing story of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana. As Moderator, he will be expected to provide spiritual direction, strengthen unity within the Church and guide EPCG in fulfilling its mission of proclaiming the Gospel and transforming lives and communities.
