A routine enforcement operation along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway has exposed an unregistered makeshift clinic operating inside a roadside shanty, where a male patient was found receiving treatment through an intravenous drip amid squalid, unsanitary surroundings. The discovery, made at Barracks Bus Stop, has renewed scrutiny of the scale of illegal medical practice thriving in the shadow of Lagos's regulated healthcare system.

What Was Found
The clinic was uncovered during a joint enforcement operation involving the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), the Rapid Response Squad, the Lagos State Task Force, and other security agencies conducting a broader clearance exercise targeting illegal structures along the expressway corridor. Officers, led by LAGESC Corps Marshal Major Olaniyi Cole (retd.), found a male patient identified only as Aminu undergoing treatment on a drip inside the unregistered facility.

Video footage circulated from the scene showed the moment enforcement personnel extracted the patient from the shanty before demolishing the structure entirely. "The patient was immediately evacuated, and the shanty clinic has been completely demolished," Cole confirmed.

Part of a Wider Pattern
The Barracks Bus Stop discovery is not an isolated case. Lagos State has spent much of 2026 intensifying a broader crackdown on medical quackery, coordinated through the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), the state body responsible for regulating public and private healthcare facilities under Section 63 of the Lagos State Health Sector Reform Law. In one enforcement sweep alone, HEFAMAA disclosed that it had shut down 30 unregistered health facilities across the state, citing missing professional licences, unqualified staff, unhygienic conditions, and faulty equipment among the violations uncovered during inspections.

HEFAMAA's Executive Secretary, Victoria Egunjobi, has described medical quackery as a major threat to public health and safety, warning that preventable deaths linked to unqualified practitioners "must not be allowed to continue". The agency has run community sensitization campaigns in areas including Badagry and Ojo, urging residents to seek treatment only from facilities displaying the official HEFAMAA accreditation logo and to report unlicensed operators. "See something, say something, so that together we can win the battle against quackery," Egunjobi said during one such campaign.

Why Illegal Clinics Persist
The persistence of clinics like the one found along the Badagry corridor reflects a familiar dynamic in fast-growing, densely populated stretches of Lagos, where informal settlements and roadside shanties often spring up faster than regulatory enforcement can reach them. Areas along the expressway, including nearby Satellite Town, have long struggled with deteriorating infrastructure and the growth of informal, unregulated structures, conditions that create space for unlicensed medical operators to serve residents seeking cheaper or more accessible care than formal hospitals can offer.

Health authorities warn that the risks extend well beyond unsanitary conditions. Unregistered facilities frequently lack trained medical personnel, sterile equipment, and proper drug handling protocols, exposing patients to complications ranging from infection to fatal misdiagnosis. The Lagos State Ministry of Health has continued to flag quackery as a recurring theme in its public health messaging alongside other safety concerns, reinforcing that the fight against unlicensed practice remains an active state priority rather than a one-off enforcement exercise.

What Happens Next
Authorities have not disclosed whether any arrests were made in connection with the Barracks Bus Stop clinic, nor the current condition of the rescued patient. The demolition of the shanty structure mirrors the state's established enforcement pattern: sealing or physically removing unregistered facilities once discovered, while relying on public reporting and community sensitization to identify others operating undetected across the state's sprawling informal settlements.
