Cambridge’s Youngest Black Professor Jason Arday Found Dead Days After Resignation

Former University of Cambridge professor Jason Arday has been found dead at a home in Battersea, south London — just days after resigning from his post amid plagiarism allegations.

Arday, 41, was discovered unresponsive on Friday, August 14. Emergency services arrived shortly after 3pm, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed they were alerted by the London Ambulance Service at 3:12pm. His next of kin have been informed and are receiving support.

Police say the death is being treated as unexpected but not suspicious. Officers from the Met’s Central South Command Unit are investigating, with a report expected to be submitted to the coroner.

The London Ambulance Service said it responded to a call at 3:06pm, dispatching an ambulance crew, an advanced paramedic and members of its Hazardous Area Response Team.

A Rising Academic Career Cut Short

Arday, who grew up in Battersea, built a notable career in academia. After studying education and completing his PhD at Liverpool John Moores University, he held positions at the University of Roehampton, Durham University and the University of Glasgow. In 2021, he became Glasgow’s professor of sociology of education before later joining Cambridge — where he became the institution’s youngest-ever Black professor.

But his time at Cambridge recently came under scrutiny. The university launched an investigation into allegations of plagiarism, examining both his appointment and wider recruitment processes for senior academics.

Arday resigned on August 5, citing what he called an “unrelenting level of public scrutiny.”

Death Comes Days After Memoir Release

His passing comes just days after the release of his memoir, Great and Unfortunate Things, which debuted in the United States earlier this week and is set for UK release on August 27.

Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice said the university was “desperately saddened” by the news, extending condolences to Arday’s family and friends.

Investigation Continues

The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation. The coroner is expected to determine the next steps.
