Roads Minister announces 267km of road projects for Upper East Region

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has disclosed that the Upper East Region will benefit from an unprecedented 267 kilometres of feeder roads across 18 projects, as part of President John Dramani Mahama’s Big Push infrastructure programme.

Speaking during a regional engagement on Friday, the Minister explained that while earlier World Bank-supported projects delivered only 40–60 kilometres of feeder roads in some regions, President Mahama has directed that Upper East should receive a larger share.

He assured residents that contractors will be mobilised by next month, with procurement authorisations already set to be issued.

Mr Agbodza noted ongoing works on major trunk roads, including the Navrongo–Chuchuliga–Tumu Road, which will ease travel between Bolgatanga and Wa once completed.

He also confirmed the revival of the stalled Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulmakom road, now slated for completion by 2027, and announced plans for the comprehensive reconstruction of the deteriorated Tamale–Bolgatanga road.

“Work is also advancing along the Eastern Corridor Road from Tema to Kulungugu, with the remaining stretch from Nkwanta to Kulungugu scheduled for the second phase,” he added.

The Minister outlined several feeder road projects earmarked for the Upper East Region, including the upgrading of Gumongo–Nayorigo roads, rehabilitation of the Saboro feeder roads, construction of bridges on the Paga–Sirigu road, upgrading of the Bongo Central–Namon Road, surfacing of the Zebilla Hospital–Tanga feeder road, and improvements to Kusiga town roads.

He stated that contractors will remain on site until completion, assuring residents that “this time, they are not going to leave the site again until the project is finished.

“By the end of President Mahama’s tenure, he said, the Upper East Region will be “fully open with good, tarred roads and modern infrastructure,” he concluded.
