Abomosu Agenda 111 Hospital Nears Completion as Government Releases Funds

The Abomosu Agenda 111 Hospital in the Atiwa West District of the Eastern Region is expected to be completed before the end of 2026 following the government’s decision to release funds for the completion of 35 health facilities across the country that have reached at least 70 per cent completion.

The Abomosu facility, one of the hospitals initiated under the Agenda 111 programme, is reported to be about 92 per cent complete. Its completion is expected to significantly improve access to healthcare for residents of Abomosu, other communities in Atiwa West and neighbouring areas.

Member of Parliament for Atiwa West, Hon. Korkor Asante, has stressed the importance of completing and operationalising the facility, describing it as a major health investment that should not be allowed to remain unfinished.

“One of the Agenda 111 hospitals is in Abomosu in my constituency. It is huge, and if fully operational, it will serve not only Abomosu and other parts of Atiwa West, but also residents across the Eastern Region and even beyond,” she said.

According to the MP, the project is estimated to cost about GH¢11.6 million, with approximately GH¢10.5 million already spent.

“So what’s left is just over a million cedis. Will the government let that stand in the way of completing such a critical health facility? No, it shouldn’t,” she stated.

She further disclosed that equipment for the hospital had already been procured and suppliers were ready, adding that she would continue to engage the government and the Health Ministry to ensure the project is completed and put to use.

The hospital has been designed to provide a broad range of healthcare services. The facility includes four surgical theatres, facilities for maternity, obstetrics and gynaecology services, as well as male, female, paediatric and isolation wards. Staff accommodation also forms part of the project.

The prolonged delay in completing and opening the hospital has attracted considerable interest from residents and traditional authorities in the area.

In November 2025, members of the Abomosu community organised clean-up exercises around the hospital and renewed calls on the government and health authorities to expedite work on the facility and make it operational.

During a subsequent visit to the area, Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, commended the community for taking responsibility for the surroundings of the facility.

He indicated that the Ghana Health Service was working on the operational requirements necessary for the hospital to begin providing services, including the recruitment and deployment of health personnel.

“The Service will continue to work on operational needs needed to make the facility functional,” Dr. Akoriyea said after engagements with traditional leaders, the District Chief Executive and health officials.

President John Dramani Mahama has meanwhile reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing selected Agenda 111 projects rather than abandoning facilities that have already reached advanced stages of construction.

During a tour of the Upper East Region, the President announced that 35 Agenda 111 hospitals that had reached 70 per cent completion or above had been prioritised for completion.

“We are not abandoning the Agenda 111 hospitals; we are going to continue and finish them,” the President said.

The inclusion of the Abomosu hospital among the facilities earmarked for completion has renewed expectations among residents of Atiwa West, who have waited for the hospital to become operational.

Once completed, equipped and adequately staffed, the facility is expected to strengthen healthcare delivery in Atiwa West, reduce the need for residents to travel long distances for specialised treatment and ease pressure on existing health facilities within the district and surrounding communities.

For the people of Abomosu and Atiwa West, attention will now turn to ensuring that the remaining construction and operational requirements are completed on schedule so that the significant investment already made in the hospital can finally translate into improved healthcare services for the population.
