The Ghana Police Service has arrested a man who was captured in a viral video physically assaulting a suspect at a police station.
The suspect, identified as Sibamay Zakaria, was arrested after the video of the assault generated public concern and backlash.
The victim had been arrested on Wednesday, August 12, over alleged derogatory comments against Prophet Mohammed.
His arrest was announced alongside that of an Imam who had allegedly called for violent attacks on anyone who would speak ill of the Islamic founder.
Following the backlash, the Police Service in the wee hours of Thursday, announced a manhunt for the man seen in the video assaulting the suspect.
In an update on the same day, the law enforcement agency confirmed that Mr Zakaria had been arrested and was in custody.
“The suspect is in custody assisting the investigation and will be put before the court,” the Police said in a statement.
The Police also said its Professional Standards Bureau had begun investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Meanwhile, the Police Professional Standards Bureau is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and all persons found culpable will be taken through the necessary disciplinary processes,” the statement added.
