65% of Ghanaians support Mahama’s decision not to seek third term – Global InfoAnalytics

The Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah, says 65% of Ghanaians support President John Dramani Mahama’s decision not to seek a third term in the 2028 general elections.

According to the latest Global InfoAnalytics poll, 27% of respondents disagreed with the President’s decision, while 8% said they had no opinion on the matter.

The survey, conducted between July 15 and 24, 2026, serves as the baseline for a tracking exercise the research firm intends to conduct periodically ahead of the 2028 elections.

The poll follows President Mahama’s public declaration that he would not seek another term, despite calls from some members and supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for him to contest the 2028 election.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Wednesday, August 12, Mr Dankwah said the survey was conducted to gauge public opinion on the President’s decision.

He described the findings as “quite emphatic”, noting that 65% of respondents supported or agreed with President Mahama’s decision not to contest the next election.

The poll, titled “JDM says he will not seek a 3rd Term – Do you agree/disagree with him?”, found that 27% disagreed with his position, while 8% had no opinion.

“He said publicly that he’s not going to contest. So we went out and asked people, do you support his decision not to contest for a third term?”

“65% of them said they support or they agree with him not to contest in the next election. About 27% said they disagree with him, and 8% did not have an opinion. So broadly, people support his own decision not to contest,” he stated.

Support for the President’s decision cut across political affiliations. The poll showed that 76% of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters, 59% of NDC supporters and 69% of floating voters agreed with his decision not to seek another term.

Among respondents who did not disclose their political affiliation, 56% supported the President’s position, while 34% of supporters of other political parties also agreed with him.

However, the findings changed when respondents were asked whether they supported calls by some individuals for President Mahama to contest a third term.

Mr Dankwah said 50% rejected the calls, while 40% supported them, with the remaining respondents expressing no opinion.

The survey showed that only 14% of NPP supporters backed a third-term bid, compared with 63% of NDC supporters.

Among floating voters, 30% supported the calls, while 24% of respondents who did not disclose their political affiliation and 34% of supporters of other parties backed the proposal.

Mr Dankwah attributed the comparatively lower support for a third-term bid to President Mahama’s clear public declaration that he would not seek another term, saying the statement had helped ease the debate surrounding calls for him to contest the 2028 election.
