Apostle who made offensive comments about Prophet Mohammed arrested

The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the National Signals Bureau (NSB), has arrested Apostle Daniel Junior Yaw Adjei, also known as Apostle Daniel JY Adjei, over offensive comments he allegedly made about Prophet Mohammed.

Apostle Adjei was arrested by the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET) after he was seen in a video making derogatory and offensive comments about the Islamic prophet.

His arrest forms part of a broader police crackdown on inciteful comments that could provoke violence or encourage members of the public to harm others.

In a related development, the Police have also arrested 35-year-old Masud Abdullah, an Imam, over a separate video in which he allegedly made statements advocating violence against persons who speak ill of Prophet Mohammed.

According to the Police, Masud allegedly made the comments while delivering a sermon at a mosque at Ntensere in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region.

The Police said investigations into both cases are ongoing and the two suspects will be taken through due process of the law.

The Service has meanwhile cautioned religious leaders, preachers, community leaders and social media commentators against abusing their freedom of religion or expression to incite violence or encourage attacks against others.

The Police stressed that inciteful utterances that could provoke violence constitute offences and warned that perpetrators would be arrested and made to face the full rigours of the law.

The Service further urged the public to exercise restraint and responsibility when expressing religious views, particularly on social media and other platforms capable of reaching large audiences.
