Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote, President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, has held talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on strengthening investment partnerships and deepening economic cooperation between Canada and Africa.

Talks centered on two-way investment
According to a statement issued by the Dangote Group on Wednesday, the meeting focused on expanding investment opportunities in Canada and exploring how the Dangote Group, alongside other African investors, could contribute to Canada's economic growth, while also encouraging Canadian capital to flow into African markets. The two leaders exchanged views on Canada's Africa Strategy and the importance of promoting stronger two-way trade and investment flows between Canada and African countries.

Dangote struck an optimistic note on the potential for closer commercial ties between the two economies. "Strategic partnerships between Africa and Canada have immense potential to drive sustainable growth and create value for both regions. There is a strong case for increasing investment, fostering innovation, and building mutually beneficial commercial relationships," he said.

From aid to trade
The dialogue reflected a broader shift in Canada's posture toward the continent, with both leaders reportedly evaluating the transition from traditional aid frameworks toward robust, mutually beneficial two-way trade and capital flows. The discussions highlighted the potential for greater collaboration between African and Canadian businesses, with closer economic ties expected to generate job creation, innovation, industrial development and long-term prosperity on both sides.

Meeting with Canada's Foreign Affairs Committee chair

As part of the visit, Dangote also met separately with Ahmed Hussen, Member of Parliament and Chair of Canada's Foreign Affairs Committee, to reinforce legislative and diplomatic support for advancing Canada-Africa economic relations through enhanced trade, investment and long-term strategic cooperation.

The two engagements underscored a shared commitment to strengthening economic ties between Canada and Africa and fostering partnerships that support inclusive growth and sustainable development.

What it could mean for Africa
If the discussions translate into concrete investment commitments, analysts say the partnership could support industrial development and infrastructure expansion across African economies, while giving African conglomerates like the Dangote Group greater access to Canadian capital, technology transfer, and resilient supply chain networks at a time when Canada is recalibrating its foreign trade posture under Carney's administration.
