Seven-Member Governing Board Inaugurated for Abomosu STEM SHS

A seven-member Governing Board has been inaugurated for Abomosu Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Senior High School (STEM SHS), marking a significant step in strengthening governance and advancing the school's pursuit of academic excellence.

The Board, which will serve a renewable three-year term, was sworn into office at a ceremony attended by traditional leaders, education officials, government representatives, parents, old students, and other stakeholders.

The Chairman of the occasion, Mr Frank Ayim Damptey, Chief Executive Officer of Tata Beverages Company Limited, described the inauguration as a landmark event in the school's development. He commended the Ghana Education Service (GES) for constituting the Board after several years, noting that effective governance is the foundation of every successful educational institution.

Quoting the proverb, "When the roots of a tree are deep, there is no reason to fear the wind," Mr Damptey stressed that a strong and visionary Governing Board would provide the strategic leadership needed to guide the school through future challenges.

He explained that while school management is responsible for the institution's daily administration, the Board's primary role is to provide strategic direction, formulate policies, ensure accountability, and safeguard the long-term interests of the school. He urged members to be guided by the principles of Integrity, Vision, Collaboration, and Accountability throughout their tenure.

Addressing the gathering, the Regional Director of Education, Dr Ivy Asantewaa Owusu, described the Governing Board as the highest policy-making body of the school. She explained that members had been carefully selected based on their competence, commitment, and willingness to serve voluntarily in the interest of education.

Dr Owusu encouraged the Board to uphold the laws governing education, strengthen discipline among students, and work closely with school management to improve academic standards. She noted that the Board's initial three-year mandate could be renewed subject to satisfactory performance.

Speaking on behalf of the newly inaugurated Board, Prof Kwame Djan expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in the members and pledged their commitment to serving the school with dedication and integrity.

"Nobody compelled us to accept this responsibility," he said. "We accepted it willingly, and we are determined to justify the confidence placed in us through hard work and commitment."

The Headmaster, Mr Peter Adu, highlighted the remarkable growth of Abomosu STEM SHS, revealing that student enrolment has increased from an initial 35 students to approximately 1,800, making it one of the fastest-growing senior high schools in the Eastern Region. Despite the progress, he identified inadequate staff accommodation as one of the institution's most pressing challenges and appealed for support to address the problem.

The Member of Parliament for the area, Ms Korkor Asante, was represented by Mr Amponsah Douglas Paddy, who called on all stakeholders to work together to ensure the continued growth and success of the school.

Traditional authorities also played a prominent role in the ceremony. The Abomosuhene, Osabarima Ameyaw, who serves on the Governing Board, attended alongside the Kurotihene, Akyeampimhemaa, Baamuhene, Ankobeahene, and the Queenmother of Abomosu, Nana Konadu Kontie.

In his closing remarks, Mr Damptey emphasised the strategic importance of Abomosu STEM SHS in Ghana's educational landscape, describing the school as a training ground for the nation's future engineers, scientists, innovators, entrepreneurs, and technology leaders.

He appealed to parents, old students, development partners, and the people of Abomosu to continue supporting the school's development, while urging students to embrace discipline, hard work, integrity, and excellence.

Declaring the Board duly inaugurated, he described the occasion as the beginning of a new chapter of excellence, innovation, and responsible leadership for Abomosu STEM SHS, and prayed for God's wisdom and guidance for the Board, the school, and the nation.
