NPP supporters gather at Supreme Court for 'Democracy Under Attack' protest

Hundreds of members and sympathisers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have begun gathering around the precincts of the Supreme Court in Accra ahead of the party's planned nationwide demonstration dubbed "Democracy Under Attack."

The protest, organised by the party's national leadership, is intended to draw attention to what the NPP describes as growing threats to constitutional governance, the rule of law and the independence of key state institutions under the current administration.

Supporters, many dressed in party colours and carrying placards with various inscriptions, started arriving at the convergence point early Thursday morning as security personnel maintained a visible presence in the area to ensure law and order.

As part of the demonstration, the party's leadership is expected to march through selected principal streets of Accra and present petitions to the Supreme Court, the Presidency and Parliament.

The protest comes amid escalating political tensions between the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition NPP over a number of recent developments, including allegations of political persecution, selective justice and concerns about the independence of state institutions.

The demonstration was announced by the NPP after a series of high-profile legal and political events involving some former government officials and party members. The party has argued that these developments point to a pattern of intimidation and abuse of state institutions, claims the government has consistently rejected.

Government spokespersons have maintained that state institutions are operating independently and insist that ongoing investigations and prosecutions are being conducted in accordance with the law, dismissing the NPP's allegations as politically motivated.

Today's march is expected to culminate in the presentation of petitions to the three arms of government, with party leaders calling for what they describe as the protection of Ghana's democratic institutions and constitutional order.
