The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has described the Court of Appeal's decision to acquit and discharge former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, as a "travesty of justice" and evidence of what it says is a politicised justice system.
The Court of Appeal on Thursday, July 30, acquitted and discharged Ms Tamakloe-Attionu after ruling that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.
The Attorney-General has since announced that the state will appeal the decision at the Supreme Court and has filed an application for a stay of execution pending the outcome of the appeal.
Ms Tamakloe-Attionu was convicted in absentia by the Accra High Court in April 2024 on charges including causing financial loss to the state, stealing, money laundering and procurement-related offences.
She was later extradited from the United States and returned to Ghana on June 9, 2026, to begin serving a 10-year prison sentence before successfully appealing the decision.
Reacting to the development, the party argued that the ruling undermines public confidence in the administration of justice.
In a statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong and issued on the same day, the NPP alleged that the ruling formed part of a broader pattern of decisions favouring individuals linked to the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
"The NPP states without equivocation that this acquittal is politically motivated, orchestrated and planned. The speed and convenience with which this matter has been disposed of, coming so soon after her extradition, and against the backdrop of the conduct of the Attorney-General since January 2025, leaves no room for any other conclusion," the statement read.
The opposition party further accused the Attorney-General of selectively discontinuing cases involving persons affiliated with the governing party while pursuing cases against members of the opposition.
"It is also a clear and troubling sign of a politicised judiciary, one in which outcomes appear to track political colours rather than the evidence and the law. When justice is dispensed on the basis of party affiliation, the very foundation of our constitutional democracy is imperiled," the statement noted.
The NPP also demanded the acquittal of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, arguing that his continued incarceration amounted to unequal treatment under the law.
