Students With Aggregate Above 12 Barred From Medical Laboratory Programmes – AHPC Registrar

The Registrar of the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC), Prof. Shirazu Issahaku, has announced a new, stricter admission policy for medical laboratory science programmes, stating that students with aggregates above 12 will no longer qualify for entry.

Speaking at the 5th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Society of Medical Laboratory Managers, Ghana (SMLM‑G) on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Prof. Issahaku said the measure is part of broader efforts to enhance training quality and ensure that only academically strong candidates enter the profession.

“Any aggregate more than 12 cannot qualify for admission into any medical laboratory programme,” he declared.

Prof. Issahaku explained that the policy aims to uphold high academic standards within medical laboratory education and strengthen the competence of future professionals entering Ghana’s healthcare system.

He noted that the AHPC is intensifying oversight of training institutions as part of ongoing reforms targeting workforce planning, professional standards and quality assurance.

The Registrar also revealed that every Medical Laboratory Science student from Level 100 to Level 600 has now been indexed by the Council, enabling closer monitoring of training institutions and student enrolment nationwide.

The announcement comes amid rising concerns about the growing number of allied health graduates entering the job market. The AHPC has already introduced a 50‑student indexing quota for training institutions to align admissions with national workforce needs.

Stakeholders at the AGM described the new admission requirement as a significant policy shift that could reshape enrolment patterns and raise the academic competitiveness of medical laboratory programmes across the country.

Prof. Issahaku’s remarks formed part of a broader presentation on regulatory reforms, internship restructuring, professional licensing and workforce development.

The 2026 AGM of the Society of Medical Laboratory Managers, Ghana, was held at the Ghana Shippers Authority Conference Hall under the theme: “Advancing Quality Medical Laboratory Services Through Sustainable Financing and Human Resource Management.”
