The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has confirmed that a power system disturbance on the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS) is the cause of the widespread electricity outages across several parts of Ghana in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29.

The disruption, which began at about 3:11 a.m., has left many homes and businesses without electricity, with supply yet to be fully restored in several affected areas as of the time of filing this report.

In a press statement issued on the same day, GRIDCo said it had activated its emergency restoration procedures and deployed engineers and system operators to work with other power sector stakeholders to restore electricity as quickly and safely as possible.

"The disturbance resulted in the simultaneous tripping of some generating plants across the national power system, leading to interruption of electricity supply," the statement read in part.

The company said efforts to restore power are ongoing as well as a detailed technical investigation had been launched to establish the exact cause of the incident.

GRIDCo noted that restoration works were being carried out without compromising safety and assured the public that updates would be provided as and when more information becomes available.

"GRIDCo sincerely apologises for the inconvenience and appreciates the patience and understanding of the public during this period," the statement noted.
