Ashanti NPP sets August 15 poll to elect new regional Chairman to replace imprisoned Wontumi

The Ashanti Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has scheduled August 15, 2026, to elect a new Regional Chairman and other executives to replace Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, who has been jailed for 20years over involvement in illegal mining at Samreboi.

The regional chairmanship has become vacant following Wontumi's decision not to seek another term as he pursues the party's National Chairman position. Wontumi, who is serving a prison sentence, will not be contesting the regional elections.

The polls will be held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, where delegates will elect a new team of regional executives to lead the party for the next four years.

Speaking after the vetting process, Chairperson of the Ashanti Regional NPP Election Committee, Rita Asobayiri, disclosed that 34 aspirants had successfully been vetted and cleared to contest the various executive positions.

She explained that the number of aspirants was reduced from 35 after one female contestant for the Deputy Regional Secretary position voluntarily withdrew from the race.

According to Ms. Asobayiri, the two-day vetting exercise was conducted smoothly without any major challenges.

She urged all aspirants to focus on issue-based campaigning and refrain from insults, personal attacks, and inflammatory comments to preserve unity within the party.
