Azawad Liberation Front claims heavy losses inflicted on Malian army and Russian forces in northern Mali

The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a Tuareg separatist group fighting for the independence of northern Mali's Azawad region, has claimed that its fighters inflicted heavy losses on Malian armed forces and the Russian troops backing them in fresh clashes in the country's north. The claim comes amid an intensifying, multi-front insurgency that has put growing strain on Mali's military and its Russian-backed security partnership.

Convoy ambushed near Anefis
According to FLA spokesperson Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, Tuareg fighters and allied forces engaged what he described as a reinforcement convoy composed overwhelmingly of Russian mercenaries and Malian soldiers near Tabankort in northern Mali. The clash unfolded as the convoy attempted to reach a besieged military camp in Anefis, a town whose control is considered vital to Mali's efforts to eventually retake the strategic northern city of Kidal, roughly 100 kilometres away.

The FLA claimed to have seized control of Anefis itself, though Russian paramilitaries from Africa Corps and a small contingent of Malian troops reportedly continued to hold out at a camp there. A Malian security source confirmed that fighting was ongoing after the convoy fell into what was described as a second ambush, following an earlier attack on a reinforcement convoy from the northern city of Gao days before.

Part of a wider, coordinated offensive

The clash is the latest in a sustained campaign the FLA has waged jointly with the al-Qaeda-linked Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) since a coordinated offensive began in late April 2026. That offensive saw fighters strike multiple towns and cities across Mali, including Kidal, Gao, Sévaré, Kati and areas near the capital Bamako, and resulted in the deaths of Mali's then defence minister, Sadio Camara, along with members of his family.

The FLA and JNIM, though ideologically distinct one a secular Tuareg nationalist movement, the other a jihadist affiliate have increasingly staged sequential and coordinated attacks, raising concern among regional analysts about tacit cooperation between the two, particularly given JNIM leader Iyad ag Ghaly's own Tuareg background.

Russia's Africa Corps under pressure

The renewed fighting underscores the vulnerability of Russia's Africa Corps, the paramilitary successor to the Wagner Group that has provided security support to Mali's military junta since 2021, when French forces withdrew from the country. Since June, the FLA has intensified attacks on both the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) and Africa Corps positions, including drone strikes on military bases near Aguelhok and Anefis, and a swarm of 25 armed kamikaze drones that struck a camp in Gao earlier this year. A Russian Su-24 fighter jet also crashed near Gao in June, forcing two pilots to eject, though it remains unclear whether the FLA was responsible.

Background to the insurgency
The FLA was formed in November 2024 from the merger of several Tuareg rebel factions, including remnants of the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad, and is led by Tuareg commander Alghabass Ag Intalla. The group's renewed push for self-determination follows the collapse of the 2015 Algiers peace accords, which Mali's junta formally abandoned in January 2024 before launching operations against both JNIM and Tuareg positions in the north a move that reignited the long-dormant Azawad rebellion. Mali's government has repeatedly accused Algeria, and at times France and Mauritania, of backing the FLA, allegations those governments deny.

Why this matters for the region
The Sahel's security architecture continues to deteriorate even as Russia deepens its military footprint in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger through the Alliance of Sahel States. Recurring, high-casualty ambushes on Russian-backed convoys raise questions about the durability of Moscow's security guarantees to its Sahelian partners, and about whether Bamako's junta can hold territory it has repeatedly lost and reclaimed since 2024. For West Africa more broadly, a resurgent, battle-hardened Azawad insurgency operating in tacit coordination with JNIM threatens to further destabilize a border region already straining Niger, Burkina Faso and, by extension, coastal states including Ghana that remain wary of jihadist spillover southward.
