For years, pupils of New Asafo M/A Basic School in the Ashanti Region studied Information and Communication Technology (ICT) under challenging conditions due to an outdated and poorly equipped computer laboratory.
Today, that story has changed dramatically.
The MTN Ghana Foundation has officially commissioned a fully refurbished, state-of-the-art STEM Centre, providing the school with a world-class digital learning facility equipped with about 35 computers, robotics kits and other modern educational technologies.
The commissioning occurred on Thursday, 16th July, 2026.
The transformation, valued at over GH¢900,000, is expected to revolutionise the teaching and learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), while equipping pupils with practical digital skills needed for the future.
Commissioning the facility, Senior Manager of the MTN Ghana Foundation, Robert Kuzoe, said the investment demonstrates MTN Ghana's determination to bridge the digital gap between urban and rural schools.
He noted that the Foundation believes every Ghanaian child deserves equal access to technology, irrespective of where they live.
"Technology has become an essential tool for education and national development. Through this STEM Centre, we are giving these young learners the opportunity to explore innovation, creativity and digital excellence," he stated.
Mr. Kuzoe revealed that the Foundation has invested heavily in educational infrastructure across the country, with New Asafo joining a growing list of beneficiary schools.
He appealed to school authorities to ensure the facility is properly maintained.
Also speaking at the event, General Manager for MTN Ghana's Northern Business District, Nii Adotey Mingle, described the project as an investment in human capital rather than simply a construction project.
According to him, the Foundation first conducted a detailed assessment of the school's ICT challenges before deciding on a complete refurbishment of the old computer laboratory into a modern STEM Centre.
"This facility is about creating opportunities, inspiring innovation and preparing young people to become the scientists, engineers and technology leaders Ghana needs," he said.
The Headmaster of the school, Gabriel Antwi, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the MTN Ghana Foundation for what he described as a life-changing intervention.
He explained that before the project, the school's ICT block lacked functional computers, making practical lessons extremely difficult for both teachers and pupils.
"Today, our students have access to a modern digital learning environment comparable to the best.
This intervention will transform teaching and learning and give our pupils the confidence to compete in the digital world," he said.
Mr. Antwi assured MTN Ghana that the school community would safeguard the facility and maximise its use for the benefit of current and future generations.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asokwa, Hon. Amoh Kamel, expressed profound gratitude to the MTN Ghana Foundation for its generous investment in education, describing the refurbished ICT facility as a transformative intervention that will significantly improve teaching and learning at the school.
According to him, the state-of-the-art STEM Centre will expose students to emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, coding, and other digital skills, equipping them with the practical knowledge needed to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.
Hon. Kamel hailed the initiative as a major investment in the future of Ghana's youth and appealed to the MTN Ghana Foundation to replicate similar projects in other underserved schools within the municipality to ensure more children benefit from quality digital education.
He further encouraged the students to make the most of the opportunity by embracing technology, developing innovative skills, and using the facility responsibly to enhance their academic performance and future career prospects.
The MCE also urged the management of the school to institute effective maintenance measures to preserve the facility, stressing that proper management would ensure it continues to serve generations of students for many years to come.
The commissioning of the STEM Centre once again highlights the MTN Ghana Foundation's unwavering commitment to advancing quality education, promoting digital inclusion and empowering Ghana's youth with the technological skills required to thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
